Dirty Old Town

I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
I kissed my girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Clouds are drifting across the moon
Cats are prowling on their beat
Spring's a girl from the streets at night
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
I heard a siren from the docks
Saw a train set the night on fire
I smelled the spring on the smoky wind
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
I'm gonna make me a good sharp axe
Shining steel tempered in the fire
I'll chop you down like an old dead tree
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
I kissed my girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town
Dirty old town

Silver Dagger
02:59

Don't sing love songs
You'll wake my mother
She's sleeping here right by my side
In her right hand is a silver dagger
She says that I can't be your bride
All men are fools
So says my mother
They'll tell wicked lovin' lies
And then they'll go
And court some other
Leave you alone to pine inside
My daddy is a handsome devil
He's got a chain five miles long
On every link, a heart does dangle
Of another maid he's loved and wronged
Go court another tender maiden
In hopes that she might be your wife
For I've been warned so I decided
I'll sleep alone all of my life
Beware, beware, the silver dagger

My cold, cold heart is melted now
I seek for peace but don’t know how
I go to bed but only weep
My cold, cold heart won’t let me sleep
Your lonesome voice that seems to say
Your cold, cold heart will melt someday
My tears pour down like fallin' rain
Through restless sleep I call your name
Perhaps someday beyond the blue
We’ll meet sweetheart and live anew
Where cold, cold hearts can’t enter in
We’ll laugh and love, sweetheart, again
My cold, cold heart is melted now
My once proud head now I humbly bow
Your lonely face in dreams I see
My cold, cold heart has told on me

Lavendula Montpelier, Vermont
Lavendula is a femme-led folk trio from the rolling mountains of Vermont, founded in 2021. We started as a weekend busking band for a farmer’s market, but have since branched out to share our melodies and incantations beyond our Saturday ritual.
